The Key to creating the home of tomorrow is the pre-wire. If done correctly, you will have a fully upgradeable network for the future. Instead of the builder installing standard phone lines, you should install "Structured Cable". Now instead of running this to just a few locations, you would run this to all rooms in the home. You would also run this to any location where you might have a need for audio, video or computer networking in the future. Remember, if the wiring is done now, then any feature you might want to add in the future becomes a simple plug and play. In each room, the cable will be terminated in an H104 wall plate. This will replace your standard phone jack with 2 CAT-5 jacks and 2 RG-6 jacks. All the Cable runs should be terminated in a central location (ex. in the basement) at the H616 hub. Here you will use one of the CAT-5 cables to provide your phone service for the home. The H616 is a termination hub for your telephone system. This where your phone lines will connect to the phone companies incoming line. The H616 also has a built-in RG-31X block for your security system to plug in. By using Structured Cable, you automatically are able to use up to 4 phone lines, plus have the ability to upgrade to any of the many Network Video, Audio or Computer systems.
Many of today's builders are offering "Smart Homes". But
be careful, many of these builders are just replacing the phone cable with CAT-5
cable. Cat-5 does not provide you with
the resources needed to handle the Audio or Video distribution that is available
today.
