Going to the movies used to be an event. Today, fighting the
crowds for overpriced popcorn and $10.00 seat tickets is becoming an event to be
avoided. We all love to be entertained and today's technology allows us to
do this in the comfort of our own home.
There are many misconception to owning your own home
theater system:
- There just too expensive.........wrong!!
Can you spend $100,000 on a home theater system? Absolutely. Do you have to?
No! A quality home theater systems can be purchased for as little as
$700. When you incorporate this into your home loan, it comes down to a
couple of dollars a month.
- I don't have the room for it.....wrong!!
A home theater system can be incorporated into any room. The speakers can be
placed in the wall, in the ceiling, or sitting on a book shelf. There are
many possible solutions to any room.
- They are just too confusing.....when
you read magazine or talk to an audio tech, they can get pretty
technical. Dolby Prologic, Surround Sound, Surround ES, 5.1, 6.1...ect
(I just want to watch movie!!!!!). The truth is that you can get very
technical if you want to, but it is not necessary. We are not trying
to set up a Lucas, inc THX movie theater, we are setting up an in-home
theater that will make all of our tapes and DVD sound great.
What do you need?
- Front Channel Speakers(2)...these speakers are placed on
either side of the TV screen.
- Center Channel Speaker(1)...this speaker is placed on
top of the TV.
- Rear Channel Speakers(2)....these speakers are placed to
either side and behind the viewing area.
- Sub-Woofer(1)....this speaker gives the bass to the
sound (rattles the teeth during explosions).
- Home Theater Receiver...this is a decoder that amplifies
the sound and sends to to it's proper location. It is what makes you hear
the bullet wiz by your ear during the gun fight.
How do I layout the system?
This is a diagram of a ceiling layout. It shows a room where a wall
layout would not be practical. We are using AIM speaker that allow us to direct
the sound to our listening area. You can see we still have the basic setup of
the center and front channel speakers up front and the rear channel speakers in
back of the listening area. The Subwoofer is not seen, but should be
located towards a corner near the front of the room. Your exact
layout will vary with the room, but you can fax your room layout to us at
888-992-9696 and we can give you our advise.
Suggestions
- if you have a choice, avoid a room that is perfectly
square or where one dimension is exactly twice the other. This will
increase the resonance and change the coloration of the sound.
- center the seating area between the side walls that
house the surround speakers.
- the closer a speaker is placed to the corner walls and
the floor the greater the bass response. This can result in overpowering
bass and possibly drowning out the dialog.
- The surround speakers (rear speakers) should be place
one to three feet above the listening position.
- the sub-woofer should be placed away front and
rear speakers so as not to overwhelm them. Low frequency sound is non
directional, so placement is not critical.
- beware of bare surfaces. They can cause unwanted
reflecting of sound. Rooms should be carpeted and can be softened by using
drapes or bookcases (items that will displace or absorb sound).
