To accentuate textured area with highlights and shadows, position the light source close to the object allowing the light to skim across the surface. 

Path/Safety Lighting

For beauty, safety and to provide adequate lighting for sure footing, use lower wattage lights positioned close to the path with overlapping pools of light.

Security Lighting

To discourage prowlers illuminate dark area all around your home, especially at windows and doors.

Step/Safety Lighting

Place lower wattage lights with overlapping pools of light for beauty, safety and to illuminate the steps to provide adequate lighting for sure footing.

Uplighting

To create contrasting highlights and shadows, place one or two accent lights directly under a large tree or within a few inches of a stone wall.

Downlighting or Moonlighting

Downlighting imitates natural moonlight and is very dramatic when halogen spots are used. Contrasting highlights and shadows on large trees, statues and stone walls create handsome focal points to your landscaping.

Shadowing

Place the light in front of the object projecting its shadow on a wall, or hang fixtures in large trees casting images on the ground.

Backlighting or Silhouetting

Place light between objects and wall. When wall is washed with light the object will be in contrast with it. The same effect in nature is trees on a high ridge at dusk.
