Imagine living in a home that brings high speed internet services to every room or enables you to telecommute and leave rush hour behind. How about enjoying the luxury of a whole house audio system or the security of a front door surveillance system? These features and many more are available to you through home integration. You can integrate entertainment, communications, safety, and automation products throughout your home. This is done by advanced wiring that is built into the walls, and a residential gateway that serves as the central hub for the electronics. This network connects all of your rooms together so you can plug into the system through attractive wall plates.

To begin to design our system, it all starts with the wiring:

In this layout, we are running RG-6 Quad shield to   each TV location in the home. The incoming satellite signal is being sent to the main hub where it is amplified, balanced, and then distributed to the rest of the home. This type of system can also be used to share video resources such as DVD or VCR players. We recommend that you run two runs of RG-6 to each video location in the home.

In this layout we are running CAT-5 or CAT-5E from all phone locations and possible camera locations back to the central hub. This will give us up to 4 phone line access and the ability to distribute camera signals back through our video cables (see layout above) to be able to monitor our cameras form any location in the home. We are also running a CAT-5 or CAT-5E from any location where we are considering having a computer system. We can use the system to network our computers and share resources such as printers, scanners or faxes.

We recommend that you run at least 2, but possibly 4 runs of CAT5 or CAT5E to every room in the home. This will allow for data communication, phone lines, cameras if desired, or whole house audio distribution.

Remember, wire is cheap compared to have to re-wire a home after the walls have been finished. While it is certainly possible to fish wire through existing walls, it is a much easier proposition to run wire for every conceivable future consideration during the construction phase of your home.
