Imagine lying back in your custom designed whirlpool bath. You light
the candles, poor the wine, and sink back into luxury. As the steam
billows around you, you hit the switch to the overhead fan for a little relieve.
You are jarred back to reality by the small aircraft engine above your
head.
Left up to the builder, they are going to put in the cheapest
available fan that will satisfy building code. Why not upgrade to a high
quality, quiet fan. Not only will you enjoy that lack of noise, but a high
quality fan will give you year after year of service. Remember, we are talking
about a product that is built into the ceiling of you home. When the cheap fan
goes burns out in a year, you will be looking for replacement parts or worse
case scenario, having to rip out your ceiling to put in a new unit at a
considerably greater cost than the price of the higher quality unit.
To begin to design our system, first we need to know:
- The Size of our room...for a
bathroom, you should take the square footage of the room and mulitply it by
1.07. This will give you the recommended CFM you should be looking for. If
the fan is too small for a room, you can suffer from water damage, too much
and you risk freezing in the shower as all the heat is sucked out. In
areas of high moisture like a Jacuzzi, you will need more ventilation.
- How many Sones do I need...a
sone is a measure of noise used in association with ventilation products.
One sone is equal to the noise made by a refrigerator running. Any fan that
is running at 1.5 Sones or less is considered a quiet fan. Some of the
Nutone LS series fans run under .8 sones and are virtually silent.
Remember that silence is not always golden though. In a small powder room
where you usually entertain, a little cover noise is often appreciated by
your guests.
- Where am I going to locate my fan...most
fans mount in the ceiling, but there are wall mounts and also roof mounts.
If you are using a high CFM unit, you might consider using a roof mount unit
to cut down on the noise generated by some of the larger units. Also, all
units that have duct work passing through the attic, should have insulated
ducting. If you don't, you will risk water running down into your unit
through condensation in the duct work.
- Lastly, what features do I want...I
am going to need a light, maybe some heat. How about a unit that is
activated by humidity or by motion. It is kind of impressive to walk into
your room and have the light and vent automatically turn on and off without
fumbling for a switch. All of these things are available for a price.
