2542 Update

The 2542 Nutone is a stereo radio-intercom. It can be updated with the Nutone IM-4406 or the M&S DMC3-4 system. With either update, you can reuse your existing wiring. The IM-4406 is an am/fm unit with a single play CD player. The DMC3-4 is an am/fm unit with an add-on 6 disc CD player.  Below we have included a station by station break down of the update.

2542 Master Station

IM-4406 Master

The IM-4406 is not large enough to cover the foot print or hole made by the 2542. You will have about an 5 " gap where you will have to do some patch work to your wall.

432A Master Rough-in

IR-105 Master Rough-in

 

The IR-105 rough-in is a 1/4" wider than the old rough-in, but it is 4 1/4" shorter than the old rough-in. You will put the new IR-105 in place and then patch the open area. Then you would replace existing transformer with the new transformer which is included in the IR-105.

Record Changer

No Replacement

Unless you just do not like the wood look, I would keep the unit and hook it up to the IM-4406. The unit will work fine with the IM-4406.

2550 Inside Speaker

IS-445 Inside Speaker

The IS-445 which uses an IR-50 rough-in, will cover the hole of the 2550 nicely. You will simply need to open up the old hole to accommodate the new rough-in.

2553 8" Inside Speaker

IS-448 Inside Speaker

Nutone has made an update frame called the IA-83 that will screw into the old IR-8 rough-in. This then enables you to mount the IR-80 rough- in for the IS-448 into the IA-83 adapter frame. Since you will be using your old rough-in to hold the adapter frame, there is no wall work required. This makes the change out easy.

IC-441Control

The 2553 was mounted in a 3 gang electrical box. It can be replaced with either an IC-401 or IC-441. The IC-401 is the easiest to install because it has a larger foot print than the IC-441. The IC-401 can be recessed using an IR-81 rough-in frame. To use the IC-441 you will need to measure your hole. The IC-441 measure 7" wide and 4" high. For outside surface mounting the 2553 was mounted in a brown box, this can be discarded and replaced with an IC-401W or IC-441W which are also surface mounted units.

2558 Patio Speaker

ISA-77 Patio Speaker

The new ISA-77 is a direct replacement for the 2558. The only difference is in the speaker cone itself.

2556 Inside/Outside Speaker

IS-79 Inside/Outside Speaker

The new IS-79 can be mounted right on your old mounting frame.

The old Door Speaker Can be used with the New System

For appearence reasons, you could replace the old speaker with an IS-70 which is available in Brass, Antique Brass, and White.

For upgrade to M&S System

The M & S system offers an add-on 6-disc CD player and the option of adding stereo music via the MC960A amplifier.

2542 Master Station

DMC3-4  

The DMC3-4 is designed to work with your existing speaker wires.

The DMC3-4 also gives you the option of true stereo with the MC960A amplifier

 

432A Rough-in

DMC1H ..for use with DMC3-4

DMC1HC..for use with DMC3-4 and DMC1CD compact disc player

 

The DMC1H is designed to be used with the DMCFR trim plate. The cover plate is 10" tall, so you will still need to do some patch work to cover up the old hole. If you to to the DMC3-4 and DMC1CD cd player, the the DMCFC trim plate will come close. The trim plate is 15-5/8" tall so it will cover up the old hole.

 

Procedure for stereo speakerTo achieve true stereo music, you will need to extend your speaker wires to the nearest open location. There they will be connected to the MC960PA stereo amplifier. The MC960PA can be mounted in the basement or a closet and connect to the DMC3-4 via the MS7XSC cable.

The DMC3R is used with the DMCFR to attach to the current metal rough-in frame and cover the old hole. It makes a very easy and quick change out.
2553 8" Inside Speaker

IS-79MOD

The IS-79 is a speaker that can be painted to match your room. It comes with a volume control (not shown) for music only. It will mount to your existing metal frame

If intercom is desired, you would need to use the DMC3R with the DMC1HR frame and do some wall patching.

M & S does not make a control only, so you can replace the control with the DMC3RW speaker with the DMCFRW update frame.

The NW8 is smaller than the 2558, but is a surface mount and will use the same wiring.

2556 Inside/Outside Speaker

IS-79 mod

The 2014 and the IS-79 are similar in appearance. They both have a metal grill. The old 2014 is 1 " larger than the IS-79 but the new IS-79 should mount in the old rough-in.
