IM406 Update

The IM406 is easily replaced by the IM-4406 or the M&S DMC3-4 system. With either update, you can reuse your existing wiring. The IM-4406 is an am/fm unit with a single play CD player. The DMC3-4 is an am/fm unit with an add-on 6 disc CD player.  Below we have included a station by station break down of the update.

The IM-4406 is large enough to cover the foot print made by the IM406. You can simply remove the IM406 and put The IM-4406 in it's place.

IR-10 Rough-in

The IR-105 rough-in is 1/4" longer and 1 3/4" larger than the old rough-in. You just new to open up the old hole to fit the new rough-in. Then you would replace existing transformer with the new transformers which is included in the IR-105.

The IC-41 was mounted in a 3 gang electrical box. It can be replaced with either an IC-401 or IC-441. The IC-401 is the easiest to install because it has a larger foot print than the IC-441. The IC-401 can be recessed using an IR-81 rough-in frame. To use the IC-441 you will need to measure your hole. The IC-441 measure 7" wide and 4" high. For outside surface mounting the IC-41 was mounted in a brown box, this can be discarded and replaced with an IC-401W or IC-441W which are also surface mounted units.

Both the ISA-49 and IS-449 are surface mount speakers. This makes it a simple matter of just replacing one speaker with the other.

Nutone has made an update frame called the IA-83 that will screw into the old IR-8 rough-in. This then enables you to mount the IR-80 rough- in for the IS-448 into the IA-83 adapter frame. Since you will be using your old rough-in to hold the adapter frame, there is no wall work required. This makes the change out easy.

You will need to remove the old rough-in and replace it with the IA-83 adapter and the IR-80 to mount the IS-448. You gain a bigger speaker, but loose the clock.

You would remove the black IA-6C cord from your desk speaker and connect it to the IS-445. This then mounts into the IA-60 desk top adapter.

ISA-45 Inside Speaker

You would remove your old rough-in and replace it with the new IR-50 rough-in. This will require you to open up the old hole to 5 1/4" x 7". Then simply connect the new speaker.

ISB-44 Desk Top Clock Speaker

You would remove the black IA-6C cord from your desk speaker and connect it to the IS-445. This then mounts into the IA-60 desk top adapter.

The DMC1H is designed to be used with the DMCFR trim plate to cover the area of the IM406. The DMCFC is the trim plate for the DMC1HC
Procedure for stereo speakerTo achieve true stereo music, you will need to extend your speaker wires to the nearest open location. There they will be connected to the MC960PA stereo amplifier. The MC960PA can be mounted in the basement or a closet and connect to the DMC3-4 via the MS7XSC cable.

If intercom is desired, you would need to use the DMC4R with the DMC1HR frame and do some wall patching.

ISA-46 Desk Top Speaker

You would remove the black IA-6C cord from your desk speaker and connect it to the DMC4RS. Then you can use the DMC1HRWS surface mount frame. It will not tilt up, but it will sit on the desk.

The DMC3R is used with the DMCFR to attach to the current metal rough-in frame and cover the old hole. It makes a very easy and quick change out.

ISB-44 Desk Top Clock Speaker

You would remove the black IA-6C cord from your desk speaker and connect it to the DMC3RS. Then you can use the DMC1HRWS surface mount frame. It will not tilt up, but it will sit on the desk.
