SM428 Update

The SM428 Nutone is a stereo radio-intercom which even by today's standard is a good system. The SM428 is easily replaced by the M & S DMC3-4. In updating to the DMC3-4, you will be able to use your existing wiring. The SM428 is an 8 wire(4 twisted pairs) system. The DMC3-4 is a 4 wire system. When wiring the new system you will simply ignore two of the twisted pairs. Below we have included a station by station break down of the update.

The DMC1H is designed to be used with the DMCFR trim plate to cover the area of the 2067. The DMCFC is the trim plate for the DMC1HC

RC-91 Record Changer

No Replacement

Unless you just do not like the wood look, I would keep the unit and hook it up to the DMC3-4. The unit will work fine with the DMC3-4

CP-82 Cassette Player

No Replacement

Procedure for stereo speakerTo achieve true stereo music, you will need to extend your speaker wires to the nearest open location. There they will be connected to the MC960PA stereo amplifier. The MC960PA can be mounted in the basement or a closet and connect to the DMC3-4 via the MS7XSC cable. 

SS-48C or SS-48 Inside Speaker

The IS-79 is a speaker that can be painted to match your room. It comes with a volume control (not shown) for music only. It will mount to your existing metal frame

If intercom is desired, you would need to use the DMC4R with the DMC1HR frame and do some wall patching.

 

SS-40 Inside Speaker

These speakers do not need to be replaced. You will need to change the speakers cones to a 45 ohm cone (available thru R & I)

-or-

you can use the FMBM stereo speaker with the SAMB rough-in. It is 15" tall and 11" wide, so you will need to do some patching along the sides.  If you have these connected to the SR-42 control, you will replace the control with the SVC96, this fits in a single gang electric box

M & S does not make a control only, so you can replace the control with the DMC3RW speaker with the DMCFRW update frame.

ISA-46 Desk Top Speaker

You would remove the black IA-6C cord from your desk speaker and connect it to the DMC4RS. Then you can use the DMC1HRWS surface mount frame. It will not tilt up, but it will sit on the desk.

ISA-45 Inside Speaker

The DMC3R is used with the DMCFR to attach to the current metal rough-in frame and cover the old hole. It makes a very easy and quick change out.

ISB-44 Desk Top Clock Speaker

You would remove the black IA-6C cord from your desk speaker and connect it to the DMC3RS. Then you can use the DMC1HRWS surface mount frame. It will not tilt up, but it will sit on the desk.

The NW8 will replace the ISA-77 and surface mount.
